February 2026

Hello Best Flower Friends!

I am happy to be writing the first official monthly newsletter from Blue Flag Farm!  I am so thrilled that you’d like to be one of my Best Flower Friends and I can’t wait to share, grow, and learn with you!  It’s been hard to start this newsletter because I haven’t been sure what to say to be honest!  But everyone tells me newsletters help grow businesses, so I’m giving it a go!  If we’ve never met, I’m Katie, the owner/farmer/florist of Blue Flag Farm.  I’m so glad you’re here! The farm is located in beautiful Buxton Maine on 3.5 acres which includes our cute little 1830’s cape and 1 acre intensely farmed with flower crops. We also use neighbors land to grow flowers! My husband and I have three amazing children, all under the age of 10. Blue Flag Farm allows me to have my own business and provide the kind of childhood we want our kids to enjoy. Supporting BFF helps make these dreams come true, so THANK YOU!

Reflecting on 2025, I am so glad I have decided to focus my growing on spring crops.  The land, my energy, and the plants seem to thrive best April through early July. We start with specialty narcissus, hellebores, and muscari.  Then a symphony of amazing spring perennials and fall planted bulb crops come on, including tulips, leucojum, fritillaria, dicentra, geum, columbine, and digitalis. A sea of bearded iris joins in and we end our main growing season with the amazing divas we all love: peonies! I’m leaning in to this new focus, transferring all my beds from annual crops to perennial spring crops.  Instead of crop rotations, I now focus on companion planting, squeezing the most out of each bed. It is a fun and intellectually exciting pursuit for me.  The summer months are now free for more camping trips, beach time, and adventures with my children.  Any summer/fall event florals are packed with flowers I source through the Maine Flower Collective (https://www.maineflowercollective.com/) and other local growers.

I’m adding in two more focuses for Blue Flag Farm in 2026: rentals and workshops!

High quality, professional grade arbors and chuppahs available for rent to the public and even more for floral professionals. Information about rentals direct to customers is live on my website: https://www.blueflagmaine.com/shop/rentals

If you are a florist or venue, reach out for the password for the wholesale rental portal on my website. Email me at blueflagfarmmaine@gmail.com

As a longtime teacher, I am also leaning into workshops this year as it is something I very much enjoy.  What's better than hanging out with great people doing fun, creative things? Nothing!! As a former k-12 Visual Art teacher, CTE Horticulture and Landscaping teacher, and frequent speaker for gardening clubs, I really feel the joy of teaching in my bones.  I hope I’ll have the opportunity to share the love with you this year!! A growing list of workshops will start to show up on my website. The first one(s) posted for 2026 is a collaboration with Ferris Flower Farm (https://www.ferrisfarmflowers.com/) called “DIY Wedding Floral Training Workshop”.  This is designed for people wanting to DIY their own wedding/event florals, but who would like a coached, hands-on practice round before their big day. Or maybe if you’d just like to do the workshop without an event on the horizon, we’d love to have you! Participants will create a hand tied bouquet, boutonniere and centerpiece using fresh flowers from our farms. For more information:  https://www.blueflagmaine.com/workshops

Thank you so much for making it to the end of my first newsletter!  I’d love to hear from you with any ideas you have for workshops, either at your home, at BFF, or at some other sweet spot! I look forward to writing you again in March!

Stay warm, be kind, and take care of yourself.

With love,

Katie
