March 2026

Hello Best Flower Friends!

March. Grey and brown and slow all over. The ground thaws and refreezes. Water gets into our basement. One of our three children celebrates his birthday. Hockey season ends for our two sons and dreams of baseball season begin. I knit furiously to give all my pent up gardening and creative energy an outlet.  I’ve seeded some new perennial columbine and digitalis varieties that I am very excited about. Check out dianeseeds.com for some very cool perennial seed varieties.  I’ve started placing fall bulb orders. I’ve made reservations at state parks and campgrounds for family trips in spring, summer, and fall. Still, the cold seeps into our old house and the wood pile is nearly gone. “Put on a sweater,” I hear myself saying to our kids. “Put on a sweater,” I say to  myself.

My mother in law, whom I adore, says, “Don’t make any big decisions in March.” She told me once she got a bad haircut or made ugly curtains in March. Whether the decisions are big or small, I think she is right.  March is tough.  There is this disequilibrium combined with hope after winter that makes things tricky.  I desire to move fast and begin, BEGIN! But there is still slippery ice and sticky mud to slow me down.  Just be patient.  April will be here soon with narcissus and tulips and sun late in the day and the unbridled joy of a t-shirt on that first warm sunny day.

While we wait patiently, enjoying March’s gifts of tiny miracles of green, maple syrup season in Maine, and the resurgence of sweater weather, I want to thank you for supporting BFF, as it allows me to have a business and provide the kind of childhood we want our kids to enjoy. Supporting BFF helps make my dreams come true, so THANK YOU!

Be kind, don’t get a bad haircut, and give freely.

With love,

Katie
